It is very pathetic that, with much civilisation and advancement in our present day, one could hardly believe that there are still marital problems and divorces in our society, even more alarming than before. This is because, as important as marriage is to every individual, it is expected to be handled with much-needed attention and the wisdom it deserves. Marriage is indeed sweet and honourable, which is why the scripture says:
“Marriage is honourable in all” (Heb. 13:4). It is God’s will for us to get married, enjoy our marriage, and enjoy the bliss of a wonderful home. There is really great joy in marriage (Eccl. 9:9). However, the devil has stopped many couples from realising this joy.
According to the Bible, after the creation of the first man, Adam, God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone.” He therefore created a woman out of one of the man’s ribs to be his helpmate. The result of this wonderful work was unlimited joy between the couple, as Adam said, “This is now the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh” (Gen 2:18–23).
God by himself instituted and blessed the first marriage between Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden when He said, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh” (Gen 2:24). This first marriage is God’s standard for every generation.
